ESIP UPDATE: 11.22.21

ESIP,

It is that time of year to give thanks! I am especially thankful for the hard work of the ESIP community and staff and the great work we are accomplishing together.

In the last month:

  • Over 30 people have proposed engaging and exciting sessions for the ESIP January Meeting that will be held virtually January 18-21. Have you registered?
  • 12 new and returning ESIP leaders have raised their hand to run for ESIP leadership in 2022. More information on the ballot and voting coming soon.
  • We have added eight amazing early career professionals to the ESIP Community Fellow Program.
  • And speaking of Community Fellows, I have loved seeing our Fellows go on to great things. This month Eleanor Davis Pierel accepted a NOAA Knauss Fellowships with Ko Barrett, NOAA Senior Advisor for Climate, and I had coffee in person with former fellow Douglas Rao who is also doing great work with NOAA and NC State!

Looking forward I am thankful that travel is back on the agenda again and I will be traveling to AGU next month. There are so many of you I want to meet. If you will be at AGU, please let me know so we can catch up, and join #esip-agu on Slack.  It will be especially helpful to connect and coordinate as this is my first AGU! I hope to see you there and especially at Ignite@AGU on Wednesday night at Central City BBQ.

Susan Shingledecker
Executive Director, ESIP

Exploring a Dynamic Soil Information System: Proceedings of a Workshop

Soil plays a major role in farming, forestry, and environmental remediation. Optimizing those activities requires a clear understanding of different soils, their function, their composition and structure, and how they change over time and from place to place. But monitoring soil properties over time remains a challenge.

Kathe Todd-Brown (Soil Ontologies and Informatics Cluster) was on the organizing committee for a workshop dedicated to exploring the topic, now compiled into a National Academies Press book
